What does MT mean?

MT = Modified Tweet

On X (formerly Twitter), short for “modified tweet” — used when sharing a tweet you’ve edited or shortened.

MT is the polite signal you’ve trimmed or paraphrased someone else’s tweet rather than retweeted it verbatim. It originated when tweets were capped at 140 characters and there often wasn’t room for the whole original plus your comment.

Today, with longer character limits and quote-tweets, MT is much rarer than it was around 2012–15. You’ll still occasionally see it from journalists and analysts who want to share a key line from a longer tweet.

Format: “MT @user: shortened version of their tweet”, sometimes followed by your own commentary.
